U.S. Air Force NETCENTS
DoD With Net-Centric Initiative
The Air Force Network-Centric Solutions (NETCENTS) government-wide acquisition contract is a five-year, $9 billion acquisition initiative to provide the Air Force, DoD, and other federal agencies with a complete range of IT, networking, telephony, and security services and solutions. The program ensures interoperability through standards-based technology and enables the constant evolution of state-of-the-art technology and system solutions.
Harris IT Services provides full life-cycle IT and communications solutions under the NETCENTS contract, including managed solutions and information assurance. Consistently meeting or exceeding its service level agreements, the company has been awarded more task orders than any of the other seven NETCENTS primes. Below are examples of just some of the support that Harris IT Services has provided to its NETCENTS customers, which have included the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Navy.
Building a Hurricane-Proof Fiber-Optic Connection for Eglin AFB
Among Harris IT Services' recent successes in the managed solutions arena was our development of a highly survivable fiber-optic cable infrastructure on Santa Rosa Island, an Eglin AFB facility off the coast of Florida. Santa Rosa Island is home to the Range Information Grid, which supports a broad spectrum of weapons research, testing, development, and other programs at Eglin AFB. In recent years, a number of hurricanes and storm surges had destroyed Santa Rosa Island's 12-mile-long fiber-optic communication connection to the mainland. In April 2007, Eglin AFB awarded Multimax (now part of Harris IT Services) and its team partner, MTC Technologies, a $25 million task order under the NETCENTS contract to rebuild and strengthen the fiber-optic cable system, making it capable of withstanding a storm surge and overwash of 19 feet or greater. The project was large and complex, involving digging under Santa Rosa Sound and laying more than 18 miles of hurricane-survivable fiber-optic cable from the island to the mainland. Nonetheless, the Harris/MTC team completed the work successfully and on schedule.
Securing Critical Web Applications for Maxwell-Gunter AFB
In the area of information assurance, Harris IT Services performs security accreditation and certification of software systems used by the U.S. Air Force. Under a $42.9 million IDIQ task order, the Harris team has been providing independent test and evaluation, and IT security services for the Electronics Systems Center (ESC) 754th Electronic Systems Group (ELSG) at Maxwell-Gunter AFB. The ESC ELSG has been converting its business applications— including software for managing critical personnel, logistics, medical, and civil engineering information systems—to Web-based applications, which are vulnerable to security threats.
The Harris team ensures that system security requirements of those Web-based applications meet DoD regulations and mission requirements. In addition to scanning for security vulnerabilities and monitoring network penetration activities, the team performs source code analysis to identify vulnerability within code execution and works side by side with developers to secure the applications at the highest of DoD and industry standards. Harris IT Services also has provided information assurance services under NETCENTS for the 46th Test Squadron at Hanscom AFB, and for Wright-Patterson AFB.
